This oversized vest/tunic was created from an upcycled dress shirt. Two large, functional pockets were made from the sleeves of the original shirt and were hand stitched on using modern embroidery and sashiko stitching. This same stitching is repeated on the back of the garment. The arm holes have also been hand stitched to create a clean edge.
Wear it as a layering piece throughout all seasons. It could also be buttoned and/or worn with a belt to change the look.
When I am working on a upcycled or repurposed piece (garment or accessory), I like to think of the story that I am adding to the fabric. I think about the people who made the cloth, who pieced the fabric together to make a garment, and who originally purchased the piece. I am then adding another layer to the materials story through dyeing and stitching in my studio. I think about the potential buyers of the piece and what kind of life the fabric will continue to lead. Not only is upcycling good for the planet because it keeps unnecessary materials out of the landfills, but it also honors the work of many people who brought those materials to life.
Sizing: Men’s M – this piece is intended to be worn oversized
Care: Machine wash gently, in cold water, using a mild soap. Hang to dry out of the sun or tumble dry low.
All work is done by hand in my Denver, CO studio.
Note: Due to the differences in computer and phone screens, colors may be slightly different in real life. I do my best to represent the true color of the product.
This item is handmade and may contain slight imperfections. This doesn’t affect the overall integrity of the item and adds to its handmade charm. I do my best to source the highest quality materials, but due to the nature of upcycled and reclaimed materials, some imperfections might occur in the fabric.
